The May issue of Professional Photographer arrived on the doorstep earlier than expected and features a 4-page "Day In The Life" article written by myself and featuring photos of Bloc Party, The Twang and the kids' fashion shoot for Cloud 9. The images look great and, although they couldn't resist calling me Steven Gerrard at least once, the article reads well so I'm pretty chuffed. It's a great issue actually and features lots about music photography. It has one of Karen McBride's Liam Gallagher pictures on the cover. On top of that, but maybe not quite so high profile, our local paper ran an article about our business but managed to make me look like some kind of alien in the photograph. Ahhh well... it's all free publicity. Since returning from another inspiring couple of days in the Lakes things have been none stop as always. I managed to add a few new images to the Steve Gerrard Photography site as I thought it needed updating a bit. I also came across this article online which was a pleasant surprise. The writer seems to have done his homework and then some! After hurtling down the M6 from the Lakes I got to Nottingham in time to witness the embarrassingly bad Annihilator supporting Trivium at Rock City. It was comedy metal at its worst but the crowd seemed to love them. I was just annoyed I got there too late to witness the mighty Gojira. Trivium were ok but after getting the shots I needed I headed home. Later in the week I was back in Nottingham to meet up with Bayside for a shoot for Rock Sound. They were nice guys and we got the shots in no time using a graffiti backdrop right by the venue. I also shot the gig later and had free reign as I was the only photographer and was allowed to shoot the whole set. The next night I did Arctic Monkeys in Birmingham which was much less enjoyable thanks to a lighting man who must have been paid to make sure we never got any decent shots! Gits! And last night at 30 seconds To Mars was even worse. After waiting an age for Jared Leto and friends to get on the stage, we were granted 2 songs to get the shots and the lighting was even worse than for Arctic Monkeys! Grrrr! Still, managed to get one or two decent ones... We did the viewing with the family who won the photo shoot on Sunday. They seemed to love the images and struggled to pick just one for their framed image. They ended up choosing this one: Hopefully now they'll buy at least one other image as a framed print or canvas. We'll see... This evening Evelyne and I were meant to go to our first anti-natal class. More for me than anything I think. Unfortunately when we arrived at the health centre it was closing and we were told they never do anti-natal classes so there's a communication breakdown somewhere. So now we have an evening free which is most welcome.. Here's a photo of Laura's little boy Ben from last week..

Often I update this Blog on my laptop but when we arrived home after Jane's wedding in Brighton we were greeted by the site of our bedroom having been turned upside down by burglers who had helped themselves to our laptop, flatscreen TV, iPod and a little camera. They even emptied my shoulder bag and took that to help carry the stuff. The bag had my DJ headphones in so they thought they'd take those too. Lowlife little bastards. I hope the karma police get them, cos I doubt the real police will bother!Still, Jane's wedding was great fun and it was good to see some old faces. I got a great shot of the happy couple which I'm gonna send them as a large print.. On the Sunday we shot a full wedding and managed to get some really nice photos for the couple, Kerry & Martin. I even DJ'd the receprion, which was really good fun. We'll be meeting up with them again next week to choose their favourite images for the album. Weddings are a lot of pressure in some ways but they're also a lot of fun and it's a pleasure being able to capture a couple on their big day. Some people might look down at wedding photography but in many ways it's more creative and demanding than many forms of photography. You have to shoot portraits, landscapes, details, low-light, reportage and traditional shots all in a few hours and you don't get a second chance to get it right. I used the Manual setting on my 1DS MkII more than ever for this wedding and I'm finding it much more flexible than I originally realised. Not too many gigs this week but last night local band The Arcadian kicks asked me to shoot their Bar Academy gig for them, so I popped down to that and sent them over 30 images today. Here's one of my faves.. They're a pretty decent band too with a great lead singer who's quite easy on the eye and a guitarist who plays with real passion. One to watch out for.. Easter Sunday saw Evelyne and I spend the day in sunny Leamington Spa photographing a family who had won a portrait shoot on a website. The weather was glorious and it was a nice treat to spend a few hours in the park playing with the kids, eating ice cream and taking our time to get some great images for the family. The prize also includes a framed 8x10 so we'll meet up with them again next week to see which images they like most. Hopefully they'll buy at least one extra print too. ![]() The fashion shoot I did at the casino on March 28th resulted in some great images I'm glad to say and the magazine described them as "beautiful", which was a relief! I was somewhat out of my depth but it seems I got away with it. Must get my studio lighting skills up to scratch.. This week I also got my first job for Metal Hammer magazine who have asked me to shoot Bring Me The Horizon at a snowdome in Leeds on the 23rd. Metal Hammer is a mag I've read since I was a kid so I'm chuffed to be working with them. Now, must get that insurance claim sent off so I can hopefully replace some of those stolen goods... Fake it til you make it..

So my gorgeous wife arrived back in the UK complete with her new visa on Wednesday morning safe & sound and looking more pregnant than when I saw her last. I only got to see her for about an hour before having to dash off to a photo shoot for a designer called Alvin Loy. Alvin has designed for some A-list celebs, including a certain Princess Diana, and I have to say his clothes are damn nice (although I don't pretend to be any kind of fashion expert).Speaking of pretending, I have to confess I was somewhat out of my depth on this shoot. I'd been asked to do it by a magazine called Live 24-Seven and agreed to do it in return for some free advertising. I'm used to shooting outside using available light but this shoot was in a casino so I had to visit my mate Tom at Calumet who very kindly let me borrow some studio lighting. On top of that I was working with make-up artists, designers, editors from the magazine and 3 top models (including one who's just been signed to Gucci), all looking to me to direct and get the images required. The designer himself had brought in fashion magazines to show the kind of shots he was after and I basically spent 6 and a half hours pretending I knew exactly what I was doing!! In the end, however, the shoot actually went well and we got a great selection of images which the clients all seemed more than happy with. They even asked me if I'd be available to shoot Alvin's next show in May. It was certainly a good experience and definitely a case of jumping in at the deep end. It's good to have Evelyne back. I've missed her being around. She brought back a suitcase full of clothes and toys for the baby so we won't be needing to spend on all that stuff too much for a while. Only 4 months now til he arrives. I'm sure that'll fly by. Photographed Damien Rice last night who was great as always but the show wasn't the same without his vocalist Lisa Hannigan. Damien was forced to sing all her parts now she's left the group and it just doesn't work as well. I've seen Lisa with him several times and she has this amazing voice which really adds to the songs. Damien was nowhere near as chatty as usual either. Still a great gig though and Evelyne's first time seeing him live. My photographer mate Lee was there which was good as I stupidly forgot to take a compact flash card with me and had to borrow one from Lee! Doh! He also gave me a live Bronx DVD which I'm looking forward to checking out. Discovered a great wedding photographer called Yervant thanks to a dvd Tony got for me. He's based in Melbourne like Jerry Ghionis so there must be something in the Australian water. I love this vibrant, contemporary style of wedding photography. A couple of years ago the idea of shooting weddings would have bored me stupid but seeing what these guys are doing makes it something much more fun, creative and worth persuing. And of course, it can make all the difference financially! Talking of weddings, I have 2 this weekend. The first is today when my ex-girlfriend Jane gets hitched down in Brighton. We're still really good friends so Evelyne and I are making a quick trip down south for that, then we shoot Kerry & Martin's wedding back in Birmingham on Sunday. Let's hope the Australian influence rubs off on me... |
